Two Separate Cuba-Destined Relief Sailboats Reported Missing after Setting Sail from Mexican Waters.
A extensive rescue and recovery mission is currently under way in the Caribbean waters for a pair of missing boats loaded with aid cargo traveling from Mexico to Havana.
Naval Rescue Efforts Deployed
The Mexican government has dispatched naval teams and military search aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying a minimum of nine crew members, per a military release.
The ships had been scheduled to reach the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their docking, authorities reported.
Context of Humanitarian Support to the Island
The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country struggles through multiple nationwide blackouts.
"Both captains and crews are experienced sailors, and the two ships are outfitted with proper navigational gear and emergency beacons," an official for the convoy said.
The nine crew members are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.
"The group is working closely with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.
Previous Humanitarian Shipment
Previously that week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and warmly received another boat that had delivered 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the country.
That ship, called "a new Granma" in reference to the vessel in which Castro returned to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, medicines, infant formula, bikes and foodstuffs.
Broader Political Context
Charity groups and individuals have primarily led attempts to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, a period which saw a energy blockade on the country came into effect.
International organizations have since warned of "dire" shortages of supplies, with more than 50,000 operations called off in Cuba amid power shortages.
Foreign policy measures have intensified in recent months, with remarks from various officials highlighting the complicated nature of bilateral relations.
In response to previous proposals, a prominent government figure insisted that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Accounts suggest that initial phases of negotiations were initiated, although their present status remains uncertain.
The maritime authorities stated it was dedicated to using every available asset at its disposal to discover the boats and guarantee the security of the sailors.
To date, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
