R360 Competition Players Subject to 10-Year Ban from NRL

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck won 20 test matches for the Kiwis before changing representation to the Samoan team.

Rugby league's authority has declared that players who sign with the “breakaway” R360 will be banned for 10 seasons.

The new league, set to start in late 2026, is aiming to attract athletes from both codes with lucrative deals and a slimmed-down playing schedule.

Leading NRL athletes have allegedly been contacted by R360, which will feature six or eight men's teams and four women's teams based in large metropolitan areas worldwide.

Representing Samoa the rugby star, who is with New Zealand Warriors in the NRL, has said he has had negotiations involving R360.

Ryan Papenhuyzen, Zac Lomax, Haas and Gray are also reported to be considering joining the rebel league.

Several leading union nations, including Australia, last week announced a restriction on athletes signing with R360 participating in international matches.

“We heard our franchises and we've responded strongly,” commented the league's chief Peter V'Landys.

“Regrettably, there will continually be organizations that try to exploit our code for economic benefit.

“They don't invest in development systems or the development of athletes. They merely capitalize on the dedication of others, putting players at risk of financial loss while benefiting financially.

“Essentially, they are, counterfeiting a code.”

The league is established by ex-England star Tindall and backed by independent financiers.

Following the possible union sanctions were revealed earlier, it said: “We aim to collaborate in partnership as a component of the international rugby schedule.

“The series is structured with bespoke schedules for men's and women's teams and R360 will allow all athletes for international matches, as included in their deals.”

The breakaway group will seek approval for its plans from rugby union's governing body, the sport's administrative organization, at its official gathering in the coming year.
