Pacific Bluefin Fish Sells for Unprecedented Sum of $3.2m at Tokyo Auction
A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's opening auction of the calendar year.
The winning offer for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the operator of a popular sushi restaurant group, which operates outlets across the country and internationally.
"The first tuna signals fortune," commented the company president, a regular figure at the traditional new year's auction.
Referred to as the Tuna King, this businessman is noted for making substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious new year auctions.
Bidding Surprise and Historic Past
Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to journalists that he was "taken aback at the amount," noting, "I believed we would be able to acquire it a little cheaper, but the price escalated before you knew it."
This latest acquisition exceeds his own record purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Despite once remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now gone on to shatter his own record yet again.
An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally associated with exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by another sushi chain operator, which stated the fish would be featured at its locations nationwide.
The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has transformed into a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
Immediate Consumption
The multi-million-dollar tuna was shortly thereafter sliced up for patrons at the bidder's sushi establishments soon after the auction was finished.
"I feel like I've commenced the year in a positive way after eating something so auspicious as the year gets underway," said one happy diner.
