Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Carrington
Securing the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
