The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
