Disputed United States-funded Gaza Relief Group Terminates Humanitarian Work

The debated, US and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) announces it is winding down its humanitarian work in the Gaza region, subsequent to approximately 180 days.

The group had previously halted its multiple aid distribution centers in Gaza subsequent to the truce agreement between Hamas and Israel took effect recently.

The foundation sought to avoid UN systems as the main supplier of relief to Palestinian residents.

UN and other aid agencies declined to participate with its system, stating it was questionable and hazardous.

Organization Timeline

The organization commenced activities in Gaza on 26 May, a seven days following Israeli authorities had somewhat relaxed a total blockade on relief and commercial goods to Gaza that lasted 11 weeks and led to substantial deficiencies of vital resources.

After 90 days, a nutritional emergency was proclaimed in the Palestinian urban center.

The foundation's nourishment distribution centers in various parts of the Palestinian territory were managed by American private security firms and located inside regions under Israeli military authority.

Aid Organization Objections

The UN and its partners said the system contravened the fundamental humanitarian principles of objectivity, fairness and autonomy, and that guiding distressed residents into armed forces regions was fundamentally dangerous.

International human rights monitoring body reported it tracked the deaths of a minimum of 859 residents attempting to obtain nourishment in the area surrounding organization centers between 26 May and 31 July.

A further 514 persons were killed near the courses followed by international humanitarian deliveries, it also mentioned.

The majority of these individuals were lost their lives due to the Israeli military, according to the office.

Divergent Narratives

The Israeli military claimed its soldiers had discharged cautionary rounds at individuals who came near them in a "menacing" manner.

The foundation stated there were no shooting events at the aid sites and claimed the international organization of using "inaccurate and deceptive" data from the Palestinian health authority administered by Hamas.

Ongoing Situation

The foundation's prospects had been unclear since Hamas and Israel agreed a ceasefire deal to implement the initial stage of the American administration's peace initiative.

It said aid distribution would take place "absent meddling from the two parties through the international bodies and their affiliates, and the international relief society, in addition to other worldwide bodies not connected in any way" with Hamas and Israel.

United Nations representative the UN spokesman said on Monday that the foundation's closure would have "zero effect" on its work "as we never partnered with them".

He also said that while additional assistance was reaching the Palestinian territory since the halt in hostilities began on early October, it was "inadequate to satisfy all requirements" of the 2.1 million population.
