Boxer Joseph Parker Faces Imminent Disqualification Due to Positive Drugs Test

Joseph Parker tested positive during a drugs test administered the very day he fought in 11th-round loss against British heavyweight Fabio Wardley.

The Bout Along with Its Consequences

Wardley and Parker were part of a thrilling encounter held in London on 25 October to determine who would become next in line for the WBO against undisputed world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.

Joseph Parker was previously the primary candidate to challenge Oleksandr Usyk after compiling an impressive six consecutive victories, but put his shot at the title on the line in the UK and endured an 11th-round stoppage.

Failed Examination Plus Possible Outcomes

A routine test administered to Parker by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency the day he fought returned positive and leaves Parker in a difficult position to prove his innocence.

The boxer's representatives published a statement which read: "The anti-doping body notified everyone involved about Parker tested positive subsequent to a doping test administered on October 25th. While the matter is investigated, no further statements will be made at this time."

Career Background

The New Zealand boxer was crowned heavyweight champion back in 2016 prior to he lost his WBO belt through a points decision versus Anthony Joshua at the Millennium Stadium 24 months later.

The fighter became an active participant on British soil from that point, competing in eight bouts altogether in Britain and transferring to the Irish capital for preparation alongside highly regarded trainer Andy Lee in recent years.

Current Situation

Coached by Andy Lee, the boxer overcame the 2022 setback against British heavyweight Joyce to achieve multiple wins which put him as the top contender to challenge Usyk until he was defeated against Wardley.

Following Parker's sample showed an adverse finding when he fought Wardley, allegedly for cocaine, a probe into the findings has been started.

  • The boxer failed a drug test for a banned substance.
  • The test was conducted through Vada on October 25th.
  • The fighter now faces a potential ban from the sport.
  • Queensberry released a comment acknowledging the adverse finding.
  • A review is currently underway into the matter.
